Fat Feminist Fun

Published September 7, 2014 by Fat Heffalump

I just have to share this with you all.

Today I found this image of a black rain frog aka Brevicus fuscus on Twitter (posted by @Strange_Animals):

I mean just look at it’s wee grumpy face there.  And that blorpy round body!

I just loved it so much I made it my profile pic everywhere.  Liss from Shakesville asked me on Facebook what it was, and I answered that it is an angry fat feminist.  One Google image search for the Breviceps fuscus (black rain frog which also found images of the desert rain frog)  And then behold – a meme was born.

We decided that the rain frog should be the official mascot of angry fat feminism everywhere!  Especially after we heard the sound the damn thing makes.  Look and listen:

Seriously is there anything more awesome than this frog?

The thing is, being a visible woman anywhere (online or off) brings a whole lot of jerks calling you various animals as a means to insult and dehumanise us.  We get mooed at, called pigs, whales, hippos, manatees, you name it.  Like this is supposed to be some great insult, I mean seriously, look at these gorgeous creatures…

The reality is, fat animals are hilarious, cute and sometimes even delicious!  If some loser with nothing better to do than harass women for kicks wants to call me some kind of animal, then good!  I’d rather be like a grumpy frog, or a manatee, or a pig, or a whale than be anything like the kind of person that gets his kicks from being cruel to other people.

Wishing for My Christmas

Published December 12, 2012 by Fat Heffalump

Well here’s something that I don’t get very often – tagged for a blog meme.  I think this is really sweet, and thank you to Tegan over at Musings of the Misguided for including me in a bit of fun.

I’m just going to have a bit of fun with this and put actual items/products I’d like rather than the big aspirational stuff, like dignity and respect for fat people, joy and happiness for all the wonderful people I know in the world (that includes you all) and a life of independent wealth.  Those are a given and I’m sure we’d all wish for those!

But if someone were to ask me what I would like Santa to bring me on Christmas morning, here’s my list:

  1. This Domino Dollhouse dress: red star skater dress
I mean, isn’t it the most swoon-worthy dress EVER?  I have the bone skater dress from Domino Dollhouse which is the same basic shape but has a higher neckline and is in mint green with bones printed all over it, and I love it to bits, but this one just takes it up to 11.  Scoop neckline.  Bold red.  Stars.  SIGN ME UP!
  2. These Asos flatform sandals:

  3. This Erstwilder necklace (available online from Birdsnest):

It’s a whale!!  What more could a fab fatty want by way of accessories?  I already have several Erstwilder pieces (lots actually!) because they are mega cute, colourful and affordable.
  4. This Librarian bracelet from A Likely Story:Screen Shot 2012-12-12 at 8.04.20 PMIsn’t it adorable?  And it’s bookish and librarian-y and I just love it.
  5. And finally, this dress from eShakti:Screen Shot 2012-12-12 at 8.14.21 PMWhen are eShakti finally going to get it together and ship to Australia?  Their dresses are so beautiful it makes me cry.  I mean this one has OWLS on it for God’s sake!

So there you have my Christmas wish list.  Well, a tiny portion of it, there are so many awesome, beautiful, fabulous things out there, I just picked a few I really liked.

Now, who shall I tag… let me see… here are some fab ladies for you all to check out:

  1. Bek from Colourful Curves
  2. Olivia from Wait Until the Sunset
  3. Sarah from Radically Visible
  4. Bri from My Scarlett Heartt
  5. Rachele from The Nearsighted Owl

Ladies you are under no obligation, but I’d love to see your lists if you want to do them!

And if anyone else wants to have a go on their own blog, please do and share the link in the comments!

A Bad Day Get’s Better

Published January 28, 2011 by Fat Heffalump

I woke up feeling pretty good.  I had my outfit picked out (something I could never wear to work – denim skirt, leggings and a leopard print camisole), and was excited to be going off to get my next tattoo today.  I showered and dressed, and realised I had a little bit of time up my sleeve, so I jumped online and went to my Facebook page.  Unfortunately, the first thing I saw was a post that was intended innocently by the friend who posted it, but was actually a big ole pile of fat hatred.  Even though it was posted in good spirit, it was painfully clear that the person who made the meme (one of those Demotivational posters) was being hateful and pushing more fat stereotypes (the junk food loving gluttonous fatty) and some of the comments were of very bad taste.

I was so hurt.  I plummeted into a spiral of self loathing and shame.  It took every ounce of my intestinal fortitude not to cancel my tattoo appointment and go back to bed.  Then it took every ounce of my willpower to not change my outfit and cover my body, to stay in the outfit that bares my fat arms and shoulders, that is visible.

But I did the old “fake it until you make it” and set out for the day.  I’m so glad I did.  Wanna see my outfit? (Click here for outfit details)  Here you go:

OOTD 28th January 2011

I’m fresh out of the tattooist chair, their apprentice took the photo for me.  There’s nothing like the adrenaline high after a tattoo to lift your mood.  I went from hating myself to feeling amazing in the time it took my tattoo artist, Victoria (from Wild at Heart Tattoo in Charlotte Street) to do the piece.

The piece is very significant too.  I know you want to see it.  But I’m going to tell you about it first, before I unleash it.  It’s a piece that Victoria and I designed, inspired by the art of Rubens Cantuni, a fabulous artist from Genova in Italy.  He does these pieces called Tokyo Candies that I fell deeply in love with a little while ago, after seeing some of his sexy fat lady artworks pop up on Tumblr.  (Rubens is on Twitter and Facebook if you’d like to follow him too.)  I saw this picture over a year ago and absolutely loved it, but it was seeing this one on Tumblr about a month ago that made me decide I absolutely HAD to have a tattoo piece inspired by his work.

I took a bunch of his work to Victoria and between us we came up with a design that was just perfect.  Not only is she beautifully fat positive, but it’s a celebration of the things I love about myself too.  I only have to look at her to be reminded of the things that I feel good about myself.

Yeah yeah, I know, you just want to see the damn tattoo.  Well here she is…

See, I told you she was beautiful.

Sleepydumpling…

Inspired by the lovely Not Blue At All’s post on sharing tidbits about herself, I thought I would do this little exercise too. Let’s see…

… is allergic to sheep.  Yep, the whole sheep.  Wool, meat and lanolin.

… used to always wear pants, but now prefers dresses to anything else.

… used to be a bit of a brown sparrow, but is now a rainbow lorikeet.

… has abandonment issues.  Still.

… is a librarian… who doesn’t have much to do with books.

… believes that all human beings deserve basic respect.

… is absolutely hopeless at anything crafty!

… doesn’t know what she weighs at the moment, and doesn’t really care.

… seems to sneeze a lot more than other people.

… is a damn good cook, when she feels like it, and can turn anything into a tasty dish.

… believes that we have one life, and it is precious and should be lived to the fullest.

… has an infectious laugh.

… hates the smell of lavender.

… learns something new about herself every day.

… is apparently an ESFP according to the Myers Briggs test she just did.

… has really hot hands like her Grandma.

… loves her friends.

… wears her heart on her sleeve.

… doesn’t hate herself any more.

… knows that for every person who doesn’t like her, there is at least one who loves her.

… is so blessed to have discovered Fat Acceptance and the people who ARE the heart of it.

YOUR TURN!!
